Rate Regions for Multipoint-to-point-transmission over Channels with Intersymbol Interference

Transmission of several scattered users to a central base station over frequency-selective channels (multiple access problem) is considered. Multicarrier transmission and frequencydivision multiplexing in disjoint bands are assessed with regard to the achievable rate regions. The application of power loading in these schemes aiming at a maximization of the rate regions is discussed. Performance is compared to the rate region obtained by iterative multiuser waterfilling which aims at maximum sum capacity of the channel. Furthermore, outage and ergodic rate regions are presented. It is shown, that multicarrier transmission depending on the employed power loading strategy can achieve rate regions very close to the actual capacity region of the channel.
